2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
½ cup granulated sugar (plus extra for the topping)
4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
For the cinnamon sugar topping: 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add the melted butter and salt. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring until a soft dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 30 minutes.
After the dough has risen, punch it down gently to remove excess air. Divide it into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope, twisting into a pretzel shape.
In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil and add ½ cup baking soda. Drop each shaped pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds.
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). After boiling, place pretzels on a lined baking sheet and brush with egg wash. Sprinkle generously with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Optionally sprinkle with more cinnamon sugar before serving.
