Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk, warmed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix the warm milk and sugar together. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In another bowl, combine the melted butter, eggs, cocoa powder, red food coloring, and salt.
  • Once the yeast is activated, add the butter-egg mixture to the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate flour, kneading the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth yet slightly tacky.
  • Place your dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • While the dough rises, prepare the filling by mixing the brown sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl.
  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Spread the softened butter on top, sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the dough.
  • Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice it into 1-inch sections and place them cut side up in a greased baking dish.
  • Cover the rolls again and let them rise for about 30 minutes while you preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C).
  • Bake the cinnamon rolls for 25-30 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  • While the rolls are baking, whip together the cream cheese, softened butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla in a bowl until smooth.
  • Once the rolls are out of the oven, generously spread the cream cheese frosting over the warm rolls and serve immediately.
